Bristol & Clifton assistant professional Matt Blackman won the final 18-hole Total Triumph Winter Series event of 2024.

He recorded his second consecutive victory in Gloucester and Somerset events, securing his win at Worlebury with a round of 68, two under par.

This gave him a three-stroke advantage over Lilley Brook's Ed Goodwin and amateur duo Nick Mills and Johnny Grace.

The competition had been in doubt due to overnight rain, but club manager and PGA professional Roy Baker reassured participants that the hilltop venue was ready for play.

As daylight broke over Weston-super-Mare, a sizeable field gathered on a cold but dry day, and were impressed with the condition of the greens.

Blackman, who was also victorious at Weston-super-Mare Golf Club two weeks earlier, continued his impressive streak on a course he is very familiar with.

He is not only a club champion there but has also joined the professional ranks.

Despite a challenging start at Worlebury, Blackman quickly recovered, regaining a stroke at the third hole.

A sequence of three birdies from the 12th hole put him in the lead for the day, and he finished with an impressive two under par score of 68.

Goodwin also lost a shot at the difficult opening hole, but birdies at the third and eighth saw him turn at one under par.

However, bogeys at the 10th and 14th holes left him three short of the winning score.

Mills and Grace, regular supporters of the Gloucester and Somerset events, tied for second place alongside Goodwin with a score of 71.

Three players tied for fifth place with scores of 72.

Ali Balcombe, returning from a playing trip to Australia, posted one of these scores alongside Alex Nicholson of Fore The Planet and the Total Triumph Order of Merit leader Luke Derrick from Clevedon.

Derrick holds a strong position at the turn of the year in the standings with nearly a 30-point lead over Goodwin.

These two are pulling away from the rest of the field, as Nicholson has moved up to third spot, but is still some 36 points behind Goodwin.

These positions will remain until the Total Triumph Winter Series recommences in early January at the historic links of Minehead and West Somerset.

Next, attention turns to the Howards Pairs Championship, which will be contested over the Channel Course at Burnham & Berrow next Wednesday.

This event will precede the County AGM.
