A young racer has won the GKL National Championship after winning four consecutive races.

William Robinson, from Weston-super-Mare, had an impressive season in his first year racing cadet karts.

The final round of the championship took place at Buckmore Park in Kent, a track unfamiliar to Robinson.

The young racer went into the race weekend with a 24-point lead over his nearest rival, having won the previous three races.

During Saturday practice, Robinson made his mark on the track, topping the timing sheets in all practice sessions and improving his times in each session.

He even managed to set the pace in the dark, racing under floodlights.

The momentum continued into Sunday, with Robinson recording the fastest time in the first practice session on a wet track.

However, qualifying brought a slight setback as Robinson reported a ‘clunking issue’ with his kart.

A quick change of karts saw him return to the track just in time to qualify on pole with two solid laps.

The first race of the day saw Robinson initially lose ground but quickly recover, setting fastest lap after fastest lap.

He won the race by an impressive 24 seconds, securing a pole position for the final race.

In the final race, Robinson lost the lead at the start but quickly reclaimed it.

He faced some competition this time but managed to hold off his rivals with some strong defensive driving, winning by 0.2 seconds.

Robinson said: "This is such a great track, it’s quite hard work with all the twists and turns.

"I loved the downhill section especially through Symes Sweep into Pullmans, and it was great to have a couple of battles in the final race.

"I had hoped to finish the season on a high with a podium at least for the final race, so really pleased to finish with another race win."

Robinson's victory at Buckmore Park marked his fourth consecutive win and his sixth race win of the nine-race season.

He now looks forward to the championship presentations at Silverstone in the coming weeks, where he will receive his championship-winning trophy.

The young racer also expressed gratitude for the support he has received throughout the season.

Robinson said: "I would like to thank my partners Apex Race Centre and Swallows Racing for their support this season along with the support from my family and friends in helping me on this journey to follow my dream to be a Formula One driver."

The trophy was presented to him by Rob Smedley and Ferdi Porsche, the great-grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, the founder of Porsche.
