Hornets welcomed Bournville from the heart of chocolate making Birmingham to the Nest in the latest National 2 West league match and in crisp blowy conditions pulled off their second victory of the season in a closely contested fixture and added another 5 points to their league tally as they have in the last three games picked up 12 valuable points in their quest to maintain National league status .
Bournville however were on the back of comprehensively beating early league leaders Loughborough University and so were confident in getting something out of this game .
Hornets started well and showed their renewed swagger after last week’s strong show at Camborne and applied early pressure. Following a sweeping move in the 6th minute where the ball was moved left and right, it was Hayden Tuttiett who was on the end of the last pass to go over for an early lead converted by Charlie Carter. 7-0.
Hornets front row made up of youth and experience were enjoying scrum time and Jake Caulfield, Callum Lane and Sam Scott had their opposite numbers in all sorts of trouble and the penalties started to come and good field position, and resultant penalties to the corner and quality forward play put Owen Griffiths over and the ever improving youngster was the recipient of some quality back division play . 12-0.
More pressure by the pack and some outstanding lineouts, much improved this season by 2 newcomers in Ethan Surrey and Corey Baker and again good territory and when Callum Lane received the ball a metre out it was bread and butter for the Hooker and Hornets had opened up a healthy lead . 17-0.
Still struggling to find any of the form that beat the Students last week Bournville were again sideswiped by another flowing backs move and not to be outdone it was the other winger Josh Sheppard who helped himself to the 4th and bonus point try converted by Carter 24-0.
Bournville’s coaches rang the changes and swapped some personnel bringing 3 replacements off the bench after 30 minutes. The fresh faces added impetus but alas another penalty by the visitors and Carter stepped up right on halftime to extend the lead and Hornets went into the break reflecting on a superb display of controlled rugby. 27-0.
Bournville have showed this season that they are much improved and after their oranges at halftime and probably a good look at themselves came out with a much improved attitude and had Hornets under the cosh but for early defence could of been a score from the restart . It took Bournville just 6 minutes to convert their first score to at last get their well deserved try 27-7.
Now with renewed confidence the visitors attacked at will and on 53 minutes got another score and Hornets were back-pedalling and being forced to make errors both in attack and defence.27-14.
Another scrum penalty to Hornets and the referee had decided that was one too many at the set piece and yellow carded the Bournville prop.
As Hornets showed 2 weeks ago when a side goes down to 14 sometimes it has a way of boosting the team and so it was as Bournville showed their class and broke free for another converted try and game on with 15 minutes to go! 27-21.
Hornets had shown glimpses but to no avail and it was the visitors that looked likely to score again and steal the victory but when Bournville looked likely to score their player was adjudged to of crawled over the line illegally and Hornets were relieved to kick the penalty clear.
Hornets did have a chance to stretch away but the shot at goal was missed and with only a couple of minutes left just kept Bournville at arms length and when the scrum was awarded to Hornets on full time one last play and the ball kicked clear and the victory was theirs . Final score Hornets 27 Bournville 21.
In another pulsating game at the Nest where if you come and watch you certainly get value for money but sometimes can be a bit nervy !
Hornets took the victory and move on to next week where there is likely to be another high scoring game away at Exeter University.
