Weston-super-Mare RFC U15 hosted Gordano U15 in a season opener friendly match on Sunday morning, playing on the main pitch in front of a large crowd.

After a lot of hard work over the summer in pre-season training, it was the chance to put all their practice into action.

Weston had a large squad on the day which allowed the chance for all players, new or experienced, to have a run out.

Weston conceded a try early on from a lost ruck but quickly regained momentum after a very dominant scrum turning over the Gordano ball.

With some great team play and expansive passing, the ball made it to the wing allowing Gabriel Lima to run in a try which was then successfully converted by Seth Richards.

Scoring another two tries in the first half through various pieces of great team play and individual skill, Weston were 17-15 up at half time.

At the start of the second half, Weston were able to give all players some game time which meant nearly the entire line-up changed and therefore meant the new players had to grow into the game.

This gave Gordano the opportunity to go two tries ahead in a short time, but Weston quickly regained momentum after some great teamwork between DJ Clist and Barney Main.

Then, following a fantastic forward carry by Alfie Duddington and a pass to the wing, Weston scored bringing the game closer at 22-27 to Gordano.

Weston were able to bring the scores level at 27-27 all following a clearance kick from their own 22 which Gabe Lima successfully chased and caught, running in a fantastic try from the halfway line.

Gordano then scored the final try of the game and successfully converted to make the final score 27-34 to Gordano RFC.

Weston really showed their potential for the season and all the hard work they have put in over the summer on game management, decision making and skills.

With growing player numbers, they have also welcomed and integrated new players to the team.

Player of the match was Gabriel Lima for his 4 tries scored.
