Weston-super-Mare AFC took their win streak to five on Tuesday evening with an impressive 2-0 home win over division frontrunners Slough Town FC.
The evening fixture was expected to be a tight affair between the two in-form teams with both coming in on four game win streaks, but Weston put on a brilliant all-round performance that stifled the Rebels attack before delivering two second-half goals.
Scott Bartlett’s men started in a 4-4-2 formation, differing from their usual 4-3-3 but allowing them to hold the ball to hold the ball up top and maintain possession in the opposition half, and that’s what they did.
Strikers Nick McCootie and Reuben Reid held the ball up well for their midfield whilst wide players Luke Coulson and Dylan Morgan were the standout performers, scoring the two goals whilst delivering numerous crosses after taking on defenders one-on-one.
Slough did manage to get through on a number of occasions in the first half, often on the counter and through long balls to their quick front line, but fullbacks Jason Pope and Ollie Chamberlain were readily on hand to prevent any real chances from occurring.
The Seagulls went in at break having had the better half, but after a tight contest the teams were still tied at 0-0.
The second half started and within minutes Weston had the ball in the back of the net, Dan Avery’s header from a Coulson freekick had glanced over the Slough keeper, but the linesman lifted his flag for offside.
Weston would continue to gain momentum though and in the 57th minute Coulson found himself wide left of the Slough penalty area.
He and Dylan Kadji played a one two before Coulson, whether deliberate or not, delivered a curling ball to the near post that bounced three feet out from the line before sailing into the back of the net to make it 1-0 to The Seagulls.
The game continued to produce more chances, with Reid, Coulson, and McCootie all going close while it took great blocks from centre backs Avery and Emlyn Lewis to prevent Slough from levelling the score.
It would stay balanced on knife edge until substitute Jacob Jagger-Cane intercepted a poor pass from the Slough centre back in the 89th minute.
He would find midfield partner Kadji who’s through ball to Morgan was weighted to perfection and the new signee made no mistake in securing his second goal in two appearances.
The goal put the game to bed and with just added time to play Bartlett’s men sat back and soaked up the pressure to secure their fifth win in a row and move up to fifth in the table.
Weston now go on to play 23rd placed St Albans City away on Saturday September 7th, KO 3:00pm.
