A young cricket star who is the daughter of a former Weston cricketer has finished her stint playing for Somerset women as they narrowly missed out on finals day.

Ella Stewart, daughter of Andy Stewart, has been playing in Australia where she and her family now live, but has just completed her first season playing for Somerset.

She now heads back to Australia, where the left-arm spin bowler has represented Western Australia at youth level.

This stint in England for Ella comes after she played for Golden Hill Cricket Club Women’s firsts last season in Bristol and Andy says that’s where Somerset County Cricket Club offered her a trial with the club.

Andy told the Mercury, Ella retains her British passport and plated in both the ECB T20 and 50 over competitions.

He also said Weston-super-Mare Cricket Club have helped Ella while she is in the country.

Andy said: “Sam Curley on the Committee has been very supportive as have Tyson and Michelle at Fleet Auto Centre who sourced Ella a car. Ella’s future aspirations are to return to the UK to further develop her cricket career.

“This season she has been over to the UK and played a full season for Somerset in the ECB County Championship, just missing out on National Final. Ella also finished in the top 10 bowling ladder the only Somerset player to do so.”

The Stewart family moved to Perth early in 2014 when Ella was nine-years-old. In 2015, Ella was selected for the WA Under-12s and played against all the other states in Brisbane and was awarded her state cap in front of a packed crowd before the WACA test match between Australia and New Zealand.
