Wedmore Cricket Club were celebrating on Friday night after lifting the Stephenson Cup.

The club’s midweek T20 side defeat Shaftsbury in the final by 41 runs at the Recreation Ground, exacting revenge on Shaftsbury for defeat in last years final. It’s also the third final in a row for Wedmore, after they also lost the 2022 final against Burnham-on-Sea.

Skipper Sam Tucker won the toss and chose to bat. Halford and Tonkin set off well, working the ball into gaps and dispatching the bad ball to the boundary.

Halford out for 26 with the score 75-1 as Tonkin soon went to 51 retired. Masters and Tucker re-built and Andrews chipped in with a quick 20 as we ended 168-2 off 18 overs.

A tight opening spell from Alfie Lavender (1-19) removed Shaftbury’s opener and set the tone as Burgess and Andrews kept it tight.

Up steps skipper Tucker to remove James Regan and rip through the rest of Shaftesbury Road, recording insane figures of 7-19 off his 4 overs.

Fin Ball also worthy of a mention having been on a hat trick during his spell.

A spokesman for the club said: “We never really let them get going and the fielding performance was incredibly disciplined.”
