Weston-super-Mare AFC took on Yeovil Town this weekend in their final pre-season game of the 2024 summer.
The Seagulls ended up suffering a 2-0 defeat to last year’s National League South champions but manager Scott Bartlett believes the performance puts them in good stead ahead of the upcoming season.
After the game Bartlett said: “We showed where we are at the moment, and the game was a really good test for us.
“Yeovil are a really good team; they were head and shoulders above every other team in the league last year and they’ve improved even further this year, and I think that we have too.
“They tested us, but we also had our moments, and it was good to see how we did both in and out of possession and I’m happy with the way we acquitted ourselves. We caused them a few problems first half and we might well have had a goal or two as well.
“Second half, the game petered out a little but when you change things about, these sorts of things can happen, but it was a really worthwhile exercise. Some things didn’t quite happen, but occasionally that can be the case in these games.
“Mark Cooper [Yeovil Manager] and I really wanted this game as the last pre-season game [before the new season starts] and I think it was really good for us to get a game against a team that are the best around, and they are just that.”
“We’re pleased that we’ve come out of the game with no injuries or strains, and it was a particularly good test for us.”
With Weston's pre-season now complete they begin their 2024/25 campaign in the Vanarama National League South at home against last season’s final fixture opponents Worthing FC, KO 3:00pm.
