It was a successful weekend for St Andrews Bowling Club’s men in the Somerset County League this week, with both teams winning and the B side regaining top spot in North Division Three.
At home to Burnham A, Saints A held the upper hand throughout, with Derek Hurst’s rink of Wyatt, Bailey, and Stott winning by 18 shots.
Brendan Duffy’s quartet of himself, Sims, Keay, and Lay were flying as they went 20-6 up after 11 ends, but they were then pegged back to 20-20 before just prevailing over their opponents by two shots.
Saints B bounced back from their first defeat of the season the previous week to take all 12 points away to Chew Stoke B.
The 15-shot victory by Malcolm Goddard, Margaret Tovey, Marcus Dew and Alan Dawes proved decisive, while the other two rinks also won.
The rink of Pattenden, Ash, Bullock, and Ware won a tight match 17-16 whilst Reynolds, Peters, Poole, and Lamb won a comfortable match 25-19.
In the Women’s County Fear Cup quarter-final St Andrews took on Portishead RBL in a repeat of last year’s final, and unfortunately for the Saints it was RBL who were victorious again.
Saints were without five experienced players compared to their squad from last year’s final, but nearly managed to turn the tables.
With three ends to play just one shot separated the two sides until one of the home rinks dropped a six to torpedo Saints’ hopes of making the final
Although RBL’s final winning margin was seven shots, Becky McMillan’s home rink of Allen, Duffy, and Bishop won by eight against three current Johns Trophy players.
On the other rinks Cromey, J McMillan, Johns, and Pitman were beaten 11-17 whilst Peters, Mangan, Andrews, and M McMillan lost out by nine points at 14-23.
The Saints Women were also in action this week in both the Somerset County League and the Women’s DRT League.
In the County League St Andrews took on Mark Moor away and left with all 12 league points after a 64-42 victory that saw them win on all three rinks.
The rink of Allen, Mangan, and Bishop won 20-14, Andrews, M McMillan, and Duffy won 23-16, whilst Cracknell, Andrews, and Pitman recorded the biggest winning margin of the day as they won 21-12.
