St Andrew’s Bowling Club’s women marched into the quarter-final of the Somerset Fear Cup with a comprehensive victory over home team Bath this week.

For the second round running, persistent rain made bowls difficult, but the result was never in doubt as the Saints fought their way to a dominant 65-20 victory.

England indoor international Becky McMillan skipped her rink of Allen, Duffy, and Bisop home by 20 shots, Meg Favis with her rink of Peters, Mangan, and Duffy won by 22, while Debbie Johns, an England short-mat player, did well to win by three alongside Cromey, Frost, and J McMillan against Bath’s strongest rink.

Saints’ quarter-final opponents at home on July 26 will be their perennial rivals Portishead RBL.

The women also avenged a recent DRT League defeat at Yatton by winning the return match comfortably, finishing two rinks and 42-28 up.

The rink of Bishop, Duffy, Mangan, and O’Sullivan won 19-5, Pitman, M McMillan, J McMillan, and J Andrews won 15-10, whilst Cracknell, Tovey, C Andrews, and Favis lost out by five points.

St Andrews men ended a poor run in the Weston and District Over-55s League with a 51-shot home win over Burnham.

They took 18 of the 20 league points available on the day after coming away 128-77 winners.

The the biggest winning margin for the squad came from two rinks. Mike Davies captained Ash and Dew whilst Derek Hurst skipped Poole and Potter, with both teams winning by 12 points.

Rinks captained by Stott and Duffy also won, as the Ware rink took the squads only loss of the day.

There was also success outside of club fixtures for St Andrews members Jack and Si Angove and Ian Allchorne as they won the annual Winscombe Triples Tournament on Sunday.

They won all their matches and beat City of Wells 10-7 in the final.

Finally, the Saints’ teams in the Somerset County League had mixed results this week.

The B team maintained their 100% record by beating visitors Mark Moor 77-51, but the A team lost at home to Chew Stoke A 55-74 and need to start winning soon if they want to stay competitive in the North One division.

In the B team’s North Three fixture the rink of Charlie and Clare Andrews, Wendy O’Sullivan , and Ware came away with a huge 35-12 victory, and the Reynolds, Ash, Dew, and Dawes won a tight game by a five point margin.
