Saturday saw a successful staging of Captains Day which one of the biggest events of the year at Brean. 2024 Club Captain Dan Broom was joined by his Seniors and Ladies contemporaries in Tim Amy and Carole Short to host the popular day for the members.

Around 70 golfers took the course in their quest for the coveted Cups and at the conclusion of play it was Chris Fairchild who won the Men's version whilst Lyn Bird retained the Ladies edition for the third year running courtesy of her excellent nett 68 leaving her 4 clear of Gail Mason.

Fairchild topped the Division Two scorecharts where the lowest scoring of the day occurred. His round of 77 was reduced to nett 64 when his handicap was deducted and this was matched by Trevor Pitt but Fairchild had the better back nine to take to silverware. Simon Prior was only one shy of the leading pair but had to settle for third in the Division despite being third overall as well! Division Three spoils went to Roger Broom, Dan's Uncle, as he posted a nett 66 to lead home 2023 Club Captain Gordy Wheelaghan by a single stroke. Chris Hubbard was third on 69. Captain Elect Leighton Jenkins was top dog in Division One being the only player to beat his handicap with a nett 68 courtesy of the lowest gross score of the day in a 75. Neil Barker was one adrift in second with Steve Jones placing third on 70.

After lunch in the Country Club, it was back out on the course for a fun afternoon tackling the layout devised by PGA Professional Andrew March for the day. Of the ten teams who ventured out for the Scramble it was the final team to finish who posted the winning score. Steve and Gail Mason were joined by Dave Mann to secure victory by just 0.1 of a stroke from Mike Short, Ron Edmondson and Tony Spencer. Captain Broom featured in the top three alongside cousin Tom and Brian Read as they relegated Keith Sargeant, Mick Norris and Mike Mullin into fourth.

Sunday morning saw Brean face Clevedon in the Quarter Finals of the Somerset Bowl. The Brean had the home advantage and certainly used it to full effect to recover from a slow start to record a comfortable 4 games to 1 victory over their North Somerset opponents. They will now face Cannington in the Semi Final.

Steve Eley had the leading score of the day in the July Stableford which was also contested on Sunday. He carded an impressive 42  points to win Division One from Barry Roe who continued his good form with 40 for second spot. Dave Porter was third on 37. Dan West was the Division Two victor with 41 points. A three point cushion separated him from the runner up who was Dave Mann after a countback with Simon Copping. 25 points for Mann on the homeward run secured him the second prize over Copping. A three way countback was required to decide the outcome of the Third Division. Tony Higgins, Mel Brown and Ray Cockle all handed in scorecards with that total on and Brown was declared the winner on the back nine  ahead of Cockle with Higgins in third.

Last weekend Tony Turner claimed the Division Three July Medal with a superb round in tricky conditions and just a few days later he secured the Seniors July Medal version as well. In calmer conditions than his previous victory, he recovered from slow start to post a stunning nett 64 to end two clear of the large field.
