St Andrews went into their final Wessex League match of the season on Sunday knowing they needed to take all 16 points against Thornbury to have a chance of qualifying for the title play-offs.

A valiant effort by the whole team ended with Sam Stocker’s away rink needing four shots to beat Thornbury’s top skip and clinch all 16 points. They finished just short, so Saints did not qualify for one of the two wild cards into the play-offs.

Both home rinks won comfortably, with skip Phil Villis outstanding as his team went quickly 7-0 up and allowed their opponents to take only seven ends. Dave Fairhurst roared his team to victory as, from 6-6 after nine ends, they scored three fours and a three to win by 15.

Away, Lee Stocker had a tough tussle on a rink he had never played before. It swung one way and the other before the Saints four edged it by two.

Saints’ mixed friendly team notched up a fine away win over North Petherton, with Jean and Richard Whittaker skipping their rinks to big victories. Both rinks scored sixes.

St Andrews women have a big game on Sunday, home and away against Clevedon in the semi-final of the county double-rink. Saints won the competition last year, Clevedon were champions the year before, when they beat St Andrews in the final, so a close match is anticipated.
