Weston Hockey Club men’s captain Jack Pitt said his side are are “over the moon” to sit second in West Men’s Concorde Division One before the Christmas break.
Weston have won seven of their first 10 games to collect 21 points.
And Pitt said they want to continue their good run into the second half of the season when the league resumes in January.
“We’re over the moon the to be second going into the Christmas break, the boys have all worked together really hard,” he said.
“The last few weeks we have had great availability and had to select our squad, and even the boys not selected have had a fantastic attitude.
“We want to make sure we continue this way in the second half of the season, which we know is going to be tough for us, but we’re up for the challenge.”
Pitt said he has enjoyed the first half of the season and what has been pleasing is the way his side have reacted to their three defeats and moved forward as team.
Weston had started the campaign with three defeats from their first five games before going on to record five consecutive victories, scoring 29 goals in that time compared to 11 from their first five matches.
“It’s been good, I think the games which we lost were actually important for us, to show the improvements we need to make and that we need to work harder,” Pitt added.
“Since those games we’ve been undefeated. Also having good availability of our more experienced players, just having their voices on the pitch has helped us too.”
Pitt said his side are still working on things they can improve after victories in their last two games before Christmas against Old Bristolians Fourths (9-1) and Clifton Robinsons Sixths (3-0).
“We have now set such high standards that even when we play well, we know we can do even better,” he added.
“We’re working on the little areas we can do even better and those things will continue to improve.
“I think our result against Robinsons showed what a tricky team we can be, and I’m sure all the boys will say that we weren’t the best team on the day, but our structure and discipline were fantastic, we held our own and got a fantastic result.”
