Nick Bily scored a last-minute winner to help Weston-super-Mare Hockey Club men continue their good run of form to beat Westbury Thirds 4-3 and move up to second in Concorde 1 last Saturday.
Weston started the game strong, and after great attacking play through Alex Leeks and Elliot Wood, they went 1-0 up through James Moseley.
Weston got caught out on the counter-attack and a defensive error led to a Westbury equaliser.
Weston quickly kicked back into gear, good passing around the midfield of captain Jack Pitt and Bily, found Moseley with the ball to fire a lovely goal.
The Weston defence of Jacob Dale, CJ Neate, James Leeks, Rob Mount and Elliot Burgess kept strong and stopped some well worked attacks at bay but a loose ball into the D snuck past goalkeeper Tom Fox 2-2.
From a short corner Weston took the lead again when Neate confidently stepped up to take and slot home.
The substitutes of Kev Collins, Ben Morgan and Fin Baker rotated well and supported the squad but an unfortunate short corner meant Westbury found the back of the goal.
Westbury’s defence was solid to the very end, but a strong tackle ball by Pitt found Moseley whose shot gave the opportunity to Bily to hit home a late winner for Weston and their third successive win.
"It's fantastic, if we keep a strong core squad and can string a couple of games together, I am quietly confident about the season," Pitt said.
"We’re now up to second, so I want to make sure we maintain our intensity in training and games.
"’m very happy, after we lost a few games our confidence dropped a bit and we struggled with our identity a bit in those games and training.
"But we’ve drilled home how Weston play hockey, and to relax and keep hold of the ball, and it’s really coming together. If we can get wins in our last two games before Christmas I will be chuffed."
Weston face Clifton Robinsons Sixes at Redmaids School at 3:30pm this Saturday before welcoming Old Britolians Fourths at Priory School at 1:30pm the following Saturday.
"The boys have done a great job so far and getting results here will show the hard work they are putting in," Pitt added.
"We just want to keep up the great form!"
