As Winscombe AFC approach the end of another long Uhslport Division One season, extended by the wettest March in 40 years, with April and May not being much better, there is a still a lot to play for.
However, there is one game left this campaign against Minehead, and a win would keep the Combe up, but a draw or a defeat would let Saltford, who sit one point behind in 14th and final relegation place, back in and travel to Middlezoy Rovers Reserves this Saturday.
But away from the first team there has been success across the junior section, who finished their campaign with an awards evening recently.
The managers and coaches at Winscombe took the opportunity to reflect on their centenary season.
Chairman Andy Flint said: “Senior football has not gone as well as we had planned due to the stop/start nature of the season and regular squad changes but Junior football in Winscombe has gone from strength to strength.
"We have teams covering all age groups from under-5s to under-18s. This can only be good for the future of both our club and grassroots football in general.
"We have great people and facilities here; we have been around for over 100 years, and we know that we can rebuild and regroup over the summer months. It was wonderful to see the players get together last weekend as they collected their awards at the End of Season presentation events."
At the end of this month (May) Winscombe AFC look forward to welcoming 60 visitors from Wolkersdorf in Germany, on the 39th annual exchange friendship tour.
“We have a lot planned for them, with a junior football tournament, Mum’s penalty shoot-out, a dad’s match, and daily excursions around the Southwest," Flint added.
"Next season we also look forward to having an under-10 girls’ team, the first in the club’s 100-year history, so there is a lot to be positive about. It has been a tough season at the senior end of the club and our existing coaching staff have done an excellent job but now we must look forward with confidence.”
