Woodland LTC's annual Les Treen Mixed Doubles Tournament again attracted the full complement of 24 players, with ages ranging from late 20s to late 80s.
Two groups of six pairs competed to determine, on games won, who would go through to the finals.
In Group A, after five hours and five matches each, only a few games separated the leading contenders and Tom Deverson and Sally Kingston finished first ahead of Chris Bond and Lucy Johannsen.
Richard Davies and Jacky Brandreth, Alex Delacruz and Linda Nalder, Derek Bayfield and Claire Norvill were all virtually tied on the same score.
A similar pattern emerged in Group B as Ben Gray and Zoe Briffitt won on 27, while Nick Griffiths and Sue Jordan took second by virtue of their result aganist Nick Evans and Gail Tasker, after both pairs finished on 20.
The remaining pairs of Roger Norvill and Carol Burrows, Neil Edwards and Rachel Oxley and Jeremy Lambart and Frances Ball were separated by a single game.
Section finals were played and won by Mark Davies and Leanne Turner (6), Richard Davies and Jacky Brandreth (5), Bayfield and Norvill (4) and Delacruz and Nalder (3) as the remaining pairs met in semi-finals for the main cup honours.
Deverson and Kingston prevailed over Griffiths and Jordan in an entertaining match, which highlighted Deverson's sound all-court defensive and attacking strengths, the net-play expertise of Griffiths and consistent groundstroke exchanges and composure under pressure of Kingston and Jordan.
Gray and Briffitt narrowly defeated Bond and Johannsen 6-4 in the other semi-final, dominated by powerful serving, free hitting and perceptive net interceptions notable for their consistency.
The final saw club coach Deverson and Kingston face former Priory coach Gray and Briffitt in a very close encounter dominated by powerful serving, aggressive but controlled groundstroke exchanges and decisive interceptions at the net.
Kingston and Briffitt rose to the occasion and remained solid under intense pressure and rallied effectively throughout to guarantee a close result.
Gray and Briffitt just failed to take a fleeting chance to break serve at 3-4 down but Gray served effectively to make it 4-5, before Deverson served out to cilnch the silverware.
Chairman Griffiths presented Les Treen with a bottle of wine, thanked all members who had helped to organise the tournament and Lucy who had overseen catering arrangements and presented section winners with a bottle of wine.
President Jeremy Lambart presented the runners-up with a box of chocolates and Treen presented Deverson and Kingston with the cup to conclude what had been an enjoyable day's tennis.
