Weston AFC's player/assistant manager Scott Laird says their final friendly with Yeovil Town on Saturday is the 'perfect game' to end their pre-season.

The encounter will be the Seagulls eighth and final match this summer, which has seen Weston pick up three wins and four defeats so far.

For the third campaign in a row Yeovil visit The Optima Stadium, with last year’s contest ending in a 1-1 draw after Tom Knowles' late leveller cancelled out Dayle Grubb’s second-half opener.

And Laird says this is why they have picked the Glovers as their final contest, as the qualities the National League side possess will give Weston an experience of things to come in the Southern Premier South.

“We put Yeovil at the end, like we did last season as well, because they are a great side, they are a side that is physical, they need space, they work hard, everything we are going to face in the Southern Premier South,” he said.

“It’s going to be a perfect game to end the pre-season schedule. Again the result comes second, it’s all about what we do, putting into part of the system we want to work on, we have been working on and things we want to take into the league.

“As long as we are working hard on and off the ball, tracking runners, tracking back, getting forward, creating chances, stopping the ball going into our net then we will be happy.”

The game will also see Laird come up against a familiar face.

Laird played with Yeovil manager Chris Hargreaves when he spent two months with Torquay United between September and November in 2007.

However, Laird believes Hargreaves has what it takes to be a success with Town and in doing so will give Weston a good game.

“Chris Harvgreaves has gone in there, a young manager, he wants to go in and refine the game and I think he will,” he added.

“I played with Chris Hargreaves when I was young lad when I was at Torquay and you could tell then the way he gave information and advice to myself and other young lads he was excellent with it.

“He's got a young hungry side at Yeovil, that’s why we put it in at the end because we know they are going to work really hard and run for 90 minutes.

“It’s going to be everything we face in the league campaign, so it’s going to be a perfect game for us.”
