CLEVEDON LTC came top in Division 2b of the Avon Winter League recently.

The club had two teams competing in the Avon Winter Mixed League, playing in Divisions 2b and 4a. The first team amassed 74 points, barely dropping a match in Division 2 and as a result they will be promoted to Division 1 next winter.

In the North Somerset League, Clevedon's first team narrowly missed out on victory in Division 1, and had to settle for second place.

The second team came up against strong competition in the form of Trull and Minehead in Division 2 and the final match which would decide which two teams would be promoted was narrowly lost to Bridgwater.

The team of Brenda Plummer, Shirley Hyde, Carlos Ledesma, Tim Wookey and Mike Maiden put in some outstanding performances to finish the season in third position, meaning that they will remain in this Division next winter.

Clevedon also fielded a team in Division 6 and ended the season with a mid-table position. Well done to all of CLTC's league players.

The club has started its summer league season when the men's and ladies' teams play in both the Avon and Somerset League divisions.

The club opened its social season with an adult-junior tournament. The event was well attended as 16 pairs of adult and junior players, of varying standards, enjoyed timed doubles games against each other.

The tournament was meticulously referred by social secretary Lucy Turner and all of those who took part were rewarded with some superb food prepared and served up by the club's child protection officer Cheryl Smith.

The tournament saw club president Margaret Dyer, partnered by star junior Alex Allen, defeat men's captain Tim Wookey and his partner, star junior Seb Hind in a nail biting final.

The club's next social event will be its annual American doubles tournament and an opportunity to purchase Wimbledon tickets, all of which takes place on May 22.

Also playing on Sunday were Clevedon's elite male players, who took on Esporta Poole in the first of the Aegon Regional Team tennis matches.

Tom Spinks, James Bassett, Sid Faulkner and Alex Allen represented the club in the singles matches with Spinks securing an easy win. Doubles pair, Mike Dale and Alex Allen won their rubber and so it was down to Bassett and Faulkner.

In some of the best tennis the club has ever seen, the pair fought hard but were narrowly defeated giving Esporta the overall win. The team meets Victoria Park next in this round robin series.

CLTC is always looking for new members, regardless of age or ability. Anyone wanting more information about what benefits the club can offer them, should email: clevedonltc@btinternet.com or visit the club in Princes Road, Clevedon.
