Weston gymnasts and their coaches smashed several British records at the world championships last week in Portugal

The team of five gymnasts aged 11-14 are the first gymnasts in this age group to win medals at a world championship for their country.

Bella Styles, Molly Brown, Lola Lawrence, Nancy Law and Seren Jones have worked with Kat Saunders and the coaching team at Weston for the last two years to be selected to represent Great Britain at this year’s world championships in three categories - female individual, trio and group.

At the world championships, each country enters their best two gymnasts with the top eight advancing to finals. Lola Lawrence became the first British female to qualify for an individual world final, with her memorable Frozen routine, flying her way into the record books and finishing a fantastic fifth in the world.

Lola then joined her teammates Seren, Molly, Nancy and Bella to compete in the group event and break another two records for Great Britain.

This team are unbeaten so far in their career and after qualifying for the final in third place (another first for Great Britain) they spent the evening working with the national team of coaches to try and improve their score in finals.

After performing a flawless routine in the final, it was nail-biting wait for the score to come up announcing that they had won a well-deserved silver medal beating internationally renowned Romania, Bulgaria Hungary and China and were only a very small margin away from the Russian gymnasts in gold and another record broken for Great Britain.

Molly, Bella and Lola were next up to compete for Great Britain and break records in the trio event, an artistically pleasing routine saw them qualify for finals in fourth and keep this position in finals in the world, just 0.2 off third position and becoming the first British trio at this age group to final.

The following week was the turn of the seniors and representing GBR from Weston at the world championships was Rhys Williams performing his iconic singing in the rain routine.

This was Rhys’ first international as a senior gymnast where he performed an artistically pleasing routine showing his potential for the senior category.

British team manager Deb Saunders paid tribute to the whole of the British team and the supporters in Portugal and said: “Two years hard work came to fruition and the backing and support of the whole of the team at the world championships made this a pivotal result for Great Britain.”

The club now prepare for the British Championships at the end of June, where these superstars display their talents once again.
