A WEDMORE woman has won art's least prestigious prize with her work entitled Tax in Creases.

The 39-year-old teacher known as Wonga Woman walked off with this year's Turnip Prize, a spoof on the Turner Prize. The Turnip Prize is awarded to the person who has, in organiser Trevor Prideaux's words, "created something that they perceive to be crap art using the least amount of effort possible."

The piece of art, a crumpled white shirt with tacks sprinkled into the creases, had to fight off stiff challenges from the likes of The Post Office Sandal, a red flip flop, and Inflation, an inflated balloon.

“I couldn’t be bothered to finish the ironing," Wonga Woman said. “It’s a great honour to receive the fantastic prize and I am fully aware that the trophy comes with a bill for VAT (Vegetable Added Tax).”

The event attracted 69 entries and was held at the New Inn in the village.

"It's fantastic that Wonga Woman has won," said Prideaux. "I am delighted with the lack of effort taken to create this work."
