A COUNCILLOR said he is against plans to permanently close a bridge over the M5 as part of a proposed development.

Cllr Ciaran Cronnelly, leader of Weston-super-Mare Town Council, said he had correspondence from residents concerned about the potential permanent closure of Wolvershill Bridge.

This was part of a pre-application consultation for a development in Wolvershill (https://www.wolvershillmasterplan.co.uk/).

“I'm against any plans that would see the permanent closure of the Wolvershill Bridge because modelling indicates that some of that traffic would dissipate around airport roundabout/A370, which is already constrained.

"I feel keeping it open, particularly as there is public support for that, seems the most sensible option,” the Cllr said.

“I've already raised these concerns to the executive member for highways and I'm more than happy to support those campaigners who are calling for this to be kept open should you need any help, if/when it gets to that point,” he added.

The councillor also stressed how “no decision has yet been made, and it's not uncommon for different options to be discussed/considered”.

He also added he met with the developers to discuss the scheme and particularly focussed on what the impact of a closure could be on airport roundabout and A370.

As their website explains, landowners Bloor Homes, Ainscough Strategic Land, and Wain Estates have been working together for a number of years to develop a detailed and robust baseline in support of a masterplan for a new, high-quality, sustainable community at Wolvershill.

A collective response from Bloor Homes, Ainscough Strategic Land and Wain Estates stated: “As a group we have worked closely with North Somerset Council, the local community and political stakeholders to help shape the proposed Wolvershill settlement in line with the council’s vision for a low-carbon community.

“Consistent with the council’s planning policy, the new settlement has been designed to prioritise sustainable travel, including walking, cycling, and public transport, as the most convenient ways to move around the community and access services.

“As part of this vision, the potential restriction of access to Wolvershill Road is being considered to support sustainable transport modes.

“We understand the importance of ensuring that any changes are balanced with appropriate mitigation measures, including at key locations such as the Airport Roundabout.

“Any decisions regarding highways solutions will need to be agreed upon with North Somerset Council.'

A North Somerset Council spokesperson said: “We have not formally resolved to close Wolvershill Road bridge to traffic apart from buses and active travel users.

“We are currently exploring transport options for the proposed strategic development at Wolvershill, as we're keen to create easily accessible, safe and attractive public transport links and active travel routes between the proposed development and existing facilities.

“We're developing our Local Plan, following updated guidance from the government, and we're planning a final round of consultation in 2025.

“Residents will be able to view our proposals and share their feedback.”
