MCDONALD’S has submitted a planning application for a drive-through restaurant in Weston-super-Mare amid widespread opposition.
The move might create about 120 jobs but most local people are against the plans While 20 people supported the plan, 110 others objected to the application.
The application is for development on land at Weston Business Park, Locking Moor Road. It would be the fourth McDonald's in the town and surrounding areas.
If the application is successful, it would create a third "unhealthy" outlet within a two-mile radius, one objector said.
"Today, many lovers of junk food use apps to get deliveries, so another outlet is totally unnecessary. Please do not allow this plan to go through," the person complained.
“We do not need to emulate America and have a McDonald's on every corner," another resident said.
Planning details
As explained on the council’s planning portal, the new site would include the erection of a freestanding drive-thru restaurant, landscaping, car parking and associated works, including customer order displays.
There has been some support with members of the public saying the creation of new jobs would be a boon for the local economy.
The location is in an underused area, one resident said.
“The site has seen limited interest for commercial uses, as highlighted in the supporting marketing report," the resident added. "This proposal offers a valuable opportunity to bring a key site back into active use, helping to regenerate the business park and enhance the area.”
But a large majority is against the move. Children in particular would be vulnerable in picking up fast-food habits while on the way to and from school, one warned.
“No thanks. Why not use the space for a communal garden and use it as [a] farmer’s market to sell fresh products from the garden to the public instead," another said. "Enough fast food, we should be doing better."
The consultation is open for public comment and closes on December 13 2024.
