A WESTON-SUPER-MARE area student who fractured her hand was suspended for not wearing a school jumper after her family said it did not accommodate for her splint.
The pupil, who attends Priory Community School in Worle, was advised by medical staff to wear a splint for six weeks.
The pupil’s mother said the wrist part of her school jumper is not designed to accommodate a splint and that her daughter has been wearing a black hoodie as a result. The student was asked to remove the hoodie in cold temperatures when in the playground.
The school said it had followed due process. The pupil is expected back at the school November 25.
The student's mother said she was asked by the school to provide proof of the fracture which she then did. The student then refused to wear the uniform jumper when requested to do so.
“As she refused this, you wanted her to spend time in SLR [self-regulated learning], which she rightly refused, and consequently we find ourselves here with an exclusion,” she said. “In addition to this, she was also asked to remove the jumper she was wearing in the playground yesterday morning in freezing conditions; this is not acceptable by anyone’s standards."
The school said it would not discuss individual cases.
“As a school, we explore every possible solution before resorting to suspending a student, and this approach was followed in this instance," a spokesperson said. "We are committed to working closely with all students and their families."
