Works designed to improve pedestrian safety in Yatton will lead to a five-day road closure in the run up to Christmas.

The work, which will introduce a 20mph speed limit in the town, will start on Monday (18 November) and is planned to be finished by Christmas, according to Steve Bridger, Independent councillor for Yatton ward on North Somerset Council

It is the final phase of improvements which are intended to help people move around the village on foot and by bicycle.

From next week, 20mph speed limit signage will be installed, while the 30mph limit at North End will be extended to the Ham Lane junction.

Crews will be carrying out the works in different places around the town during the weeks ahead, but disruption will be kept “to an absolute minimum”, according to Cllr Bridger.

While low level traffic control will mostly be used, Chescombe Road access to the High St will need to be closed when the work reaches the area of the Coop.

The closure is expected to take place between 12 – 17 of December.

Raised zebra crossings will be the last element of the works to be constructed, along with all the road markings.

It is the thirds and final phase of a long process of improving the roads and pedestrian access in the town, with the first phase beginning in the summer of 2023.

Announcing the plans almost a year ago, Cllr Hannah Young, North Somerset Council's executive member for sustainable travel said: "These works will help connect the new development with the rest of the village by providing a safer environment to walk and wheel.

"We want to encourage people to make short trips by an active means of travel rather than using the car because it’s good for our health as well as the environment. These latest improvements will help make it easier to make that choice."
