WESTON Civic Society said they are opposing the relocation of a toilet block in a town centre park.
While the group said the removal of the existing toilet block would be of great benefit, it said they have “serious concerns” over its potential replacement next to an existing café.
“We would suggest the siting of the new toilet block in this area will completely destroy its current ambience,” the society said.
“It will obstruct views over the park whilst possibly attracting anti-social behaviour further into the park itself.”
The building instead should be located on the perimeter of the park, the society said.
“Adjacent, or within, the existing car park would enable a more unobtrusive location and be of more benefit to the likely users from the town itself,” the society added.
Permission is being sought by We Made That, the council’s appointed architecture practice for the project, on proposals including:
• Redesigning the park’s main entrance to include additional planting, new seating, installation of a sustainable draining system, re-surfacing and signage.
• Removing the existing public toilet block • constructing a new public toilet block to include an accessible toilet and baby changing facilities into the park near the café.
The current block, which is due to be demolished, has been closed since December 2023 due to vandalism.
