NORTH Somerset Council have shared an update on the cliff face repairs works at Birnbeck Pier.
The work to repair the cliff face behind the landside buildings is being delivered by Vertical Technology Ltd as part of the restoration project, which is on track to be completed by the end of the month.
This phase of works is being #FundedbyUKGovernment from an allocation of £4.47m from the UK government (formerly known as the Levelling Up Fund).
In the last week, highly skilled rope access specialists have: installed steel anchor bolts at the top and base of the cliff; abseiled down the 10.5m high cliff face to remove loose rocks and debris from the cliff face; removed the damaged railings at the top of the cliff on Birkett Road; and carefully demolished a small wall at the base of the cliff.
The council also said work is now being carried out to install a new steel mesh safety netting system over the cliff face.
After that, workers will carefully demolish the small modern block building at the base of the cliff.
A temporary edge protection system will be installed on Birkett Road, which will be in place until the railings are replaced permanently.
Elements of this work are necessary to allow later phases of the project to take place, including restoring the pier itself and re-establishing the RNLI Weston-super-Mare lifeboat station on Birnbeck Island.
