As we approach Remembrance Sunday, many of us in Weston, Worle, and our surrounding villages are taking time to honour our brave servicepeople and their families.
Led by the Royal British Legion and the many, many veterans we are fortunate to have here, Remembrance is a hugely important part of the life of our community.
Our veterans deserve all the support we can give them, but we know that's not always been the case.
I know that supporting our veterans is so important to many in Weston, so I recently met with the minister for veteran affairs and former Royal Marine, Al Carns MP, to talk about how we can improve support for veterans in Weston.
I was genuinely impressed by his passion and commitment to veterans and the plans for a revamped Office for Veterans Affairs.
This new office will have a big impact for veterans in communities all over the country, and I can't wait to make sure veterans here in Weston feel the benefits.
I later had the privilege of placing a Remembrance Tribute on behalf of the people of Weston-super-Mare in the UK Parliament Garden of Remembrance.
Whilst in the garden, I thought of my grandad who served at Dunkirk, my family members who are serving now, and all those thousands across our constituency who have served or are currently serving in the armed forces.
I also thought back to the heroic actions of George Nott, a Westonian soldier who liberated the first house in Normandy.
I’ve also seen the sacrifices that service families make alongside their loved ones in the armed forces.
I'm so proud of my brother-in-law for his role in defending our nation, but I'm also proud of my sister and my young nephews for the sacrifices they make too, often not seen or understood.
Public service is at the heart of what makes our town special and our country great.
In many ways, Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day bring us together to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
I also hope this time of year encourages us all to think about what more we can do to serve our communities in tribute to those who gave everything for our safety at home.
We will remember them.
