HI-DE-HI star Su Pollard plans to bring a touch of royalty to The Playhouse in Weston when she arrives with her one-woman show Still Fully Charged, Peter Dyke writes.

It is littered with stories from her 50-year career and that includes meeting The Queen, Prince Charles and even Freddie Mercury from Queen.

The actress is best known as chalet maid Peddy Ollerenshaw from the holiday camp sitcom.

But she has starred in two other big BBC comedies You Rang M'Lord and Oh Doctor Beeching as well as appearing in 35 stage and musical shows and 40 pantos.

It means she has got to meet a lot of famous people over the years.

Su said: "I did meet The Queen. She had lovely skin. And she used to have video tapes of Hi-De Hi delivered to the palace."

Then there was the time she ticked off Prince Charles (as he was then) because he mispronounced the name of her comedy show.

She revealed: "One time the cast was waiting outside the studio for a dress rehearsal at the BBC when Prince Charles arrived. He was coming in to collect his Blue Peter badge.

"As he walked past we all said 'Hello' and he said 'Of course I know who you are. You're the people from Hoi-De-Ha.' And I just said ' Excuse me... it's Hi-De Hi'.

"I think he's great though. He's doing a good job now as King."

And of course, one of her favourite memories is meeting the late Freddie from Queen.

She added: "I'll never forget the night I met Freddie in a gay bar in Earls Court.

“He came over and said 'Excuse me. Would you like to bop?' And of course, I said yes. “This was in his days when he had that moustache and wore a leather jacket. We bopped all night.

"And I wish we had phone cameras back then because I would have loved a photo of us together.

“He was such a gentleman and before he left the club he said 'Can I have your autograph?' and I thought it was probably for his mother.

“But he asked me to sign this piece of paper 'To Freddie..' so it was for him."

Su, who is now 74 years old, says she has no plans to retire.

She revealed: "All I want to do is just carry on working as long as I can and bring enjoyment to people."

Su Pollard: Still Fully Charged is at The Playhouse on Wednesday, November 6.
