WESTON-super-Mare Carnival Committee said they had to adapt to the record-breaking financial loss of last year’s event and the retirement of long-standing key volunteers.

The committee said they had to review all aspects of the delivery and funding of this much-loved event after considering spiralling costs and additional safety measures.

The result of this work has seen the election of four new directors and the formation of a new committee.

Dick Berry, chair of Weston-super-Mare Carnival Committee, said: “This year more than ever, I want to stress how important it is that the people of Weston-super-Mare and our surrounding area come along to show their support of the Weston Carnival.

“We want to make sure that future generations get the opportunity to enjoy our wonderful carnival for many more years to come.

“We hope that everyone who comes will have a wonderful evening. Stay safe and fingers crossed for fair weather.”

Weston Carnival – which this year will take place on Friday, November 8 – has lit the town’s streets for over 50 years.

Initially brought to the town from the Somerset circuit by Weston Lions, it was then developed by Brian Coombs and the committee with support from North Somerset Council.

This year, Weston Lions have agreed to run the fundraising collection process which forms the backbone of Weston Carnivals income.

The team from ConciergeUK is developing a ‘Carnival Village’ for this year’s event with two raised seating stands on South Parade with VIP pods, a funfair, bars and music.

People will see something different this year as they walk to their chosen vantage spot – everyone will pass through security gated channels.

There, people will also have the opportunity to donate a minimum of £2 to the organisation of the event and purchase a programme.

Cash and card will be accepted. This is in addition to the usual collectors and carts following the carnival route.
