A ROAD in Weston-super-Mare will remain closed until November while the final stage of the road foundation repair works is completed.

South Road will be closed until Friday, November 22 while works to repair the road foundations are being carried out at the junction with Grove Park Road.

A spokesperson for North Somerset Council said "the road has been closed since March for major structural work" and added that the "work is now completed but we have decided to keep the closure in place while we resurface the road".

A spokesperson for North Somerset Travel and Roads said: “South Road in Weston will remain closed until Friday, November 22.

“The road has been closed near the junction with Grove Park Road while work to repair the road foundations and retaining wall were completed.

“A full road closure was needed to ensure the safe operation of large equipment during the works.

“The closure will remain in place while resurfacing and pavement repairs are completed.

“We would like to thank everyone for their patience while the final stage of the work is completed.”

In a letter previously sent to residents, the council also said: "While we were carrying out the retaining wall strengthening works on South Road, we found unforeseen voids behind the wall that supports the footpath as well as the road.

"Therefore, our engineers have taken the decision to extend the existing road closure until a permanent engineering solution is implemented.

"The extensive voids underneath the road need to be filled to ensure the future safety of road users.

"Due to the size of the equipment required and the nature of the scheme, it will be necessary for us to close the road fully for the duration of the works.

"This is for the safety of road users and our workforce.

"Overleaf is a map showing the location of the work site and a diversion route.

"We understand the inconvenience caused due to this main access road closure.

"Engineers are trying their best to address the road safety issue as soon as possible and your patience during these works is much appreciated."
