RESIDENTS, businesses and community groups are being invited to attend a public event on Tuesday, September 17 to review and discuss potential updates to the A38/A368 crossroads between Churchill and Langford.

The proposed changes aim to improve congestion at the junction for general traffic, with better flow for all road users, enhance bus travel, and accommodate additional traffic expected through proposed new development and following completion of the Banwell Bypass.

Under the concept designs – which were also shared for feedback via an online public survey in spring 2024 – the existing crossroads would be converted into a roundabout with smart traffic signals.

Creating a roundabout in place of the existing crossroads will enable the junction to function more fluidly, thus supporting a higher volume of traffic than is possible currently.

This in turn will enable a journey time reduction for all users, including buses.

The concept design for the junction includes:

• Changes to improve general traffic flow and conditions by reducing congestion for all road users

• Potentially having four controlled crossings on each roundabout arm to offer safer access for pedestrians and cyclists

• Installing new footways to make the junction safer for pedestrians and cyclists

• The creation of an efficient four-arm roundabout with a bus lane and ‘bus bypass’

• Incorporating improvement works planned in relation to the Banwell Bypass, which will see improved road connectivity, active travel options and support proposed new housing development

• The junction improvement will offer better road infrastructure creating more capacity for future traffic expected from the new bypass, local housing developments, and the planned expansion of Bristol Airport.

The in-person event for residents to discuss the A38/A368 proposals will be held on: Date: Tuesday 17 September 2024 Time: 3.30pm to 6.30pm Location: Churchill Memorial Hall, Ladymead Lane, Winscombe, BS25 5NH.

Cllr Hannah Young, executive member for Highways and Transport at North Somerset Council, said: “We’re keen to hear everyone’s views on our initial plans to improve the Churchill junction and these concept designs are the first step in making positive changes not just locally but for the entire network.

“This drop-in session is an opportunity for residents and businesses to help shape improvements for the junction, before final plans are designed, allowing us to develop a scheme that will give Churchill the infrastructure it needs for now and in the future.”

The scheme is funded by the UK Government-backed Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) – to learn more about BSIP, visit n-somerset.gov.uk/bsip
