A MAN who has been fundraising for 30 years will walk 30 miles around The Grand Pier in Weston in memory of his wife.
Paul Hobbs’ challenge will take place on August 15 and will raise funds for Cancer Research UK in memory of his “devoted wife” Maureen, who “lost her brave battle with cancer” in June.
Paul, 75, who will aim to raise £10,000 with his challenge, said: “On August 15 I will celebrate a huge 30 years of charity fundraising milestone in Weston-super-Mare and Bristol when I walk 30 miles around The Grand Pier Boardwalk.
“I am 75, I underwent life-saving open heart surgery in 2019 and I have raised over a million taking in many charities.
“The charity I’m doing this for is Cancer Research UK, chosen last summer when my wife was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer.
“Sadly, my devoted wife lost her brave battle with cancer and died in June leaving me devastated.
“Maureen urged me if she didn't make it to go on and see the event through whatever, achieve the 30 miles and reach the £10,000 fundraising target and raise awareness and help others for the future.
“I will be walking in her memory."
Paul won numerous awards - The Bristol Lord Mayor's medal, the Gold Star Award, and the Weston Town Council Borough Shield.
He was also the British Heart Foundation Innovative fundraiser of the year.
Weston Labour MP Dan Aldridge, and Weston Mayor Cllr John Crockford-Hawley will be supporting the event on August 15.
The Weston General Hospital and Avon and Somerset Police will be represented Local clubs and businesses will also attend.
