WORK to improve the road surface on the A370 (Somerset Avenue/Flowerdown Bridge/Winterstoke Road/ Hildesheim Bridge) in Weston-super-Mare will begin on Monday, July 8.

The treatment work, which will be carried out between 9.30am and 3.30pm, will be completed in phases and will involve a road closure on the outbound (northerly) side of the road.

The first stage of work will be to improve the road surface, this will be followed by a surface sealing process and then new linage will be installed later using a night time closure.

The work, known as surface dressing, is carried out on roads in order to prevent deterioration and potholes.

There is a small window of opportunity for this as it only takes a few years for water to enter the road surface and make it crack and degrade.

Once this starts to happen the road will need full resurfacing.

Resurfacing is a very expensive and disruptive process, it also uses valuable resources with a high carbon footprint and the council tries to avoid this process with preventative measures.

Only one section of the A370 will be closed at any one time as the closure will be staggered throughout the week as various sections of the road are treated.

Once the roads are reopened there will still be a lane closure in place for safety reasons until the road markings are installed.

Here is when the work will be completed

Surface dressing:

Monday 8 July - Somerset Avenue: Airport roundabout (Locking Moor Road) to the traffic lights on the approach to M5 (Junction 21).

Tuesday 9 July - Hildesheim Bridge, Winterstoke Road and Flowerdown Bridge.

Surface sealing:

Wednesday 10 July - Somerset Avenue: Airport roundabout (Locking Moor Road) to the traffic lights on the approach to M5 (Junction 21) Thursday 11 July - Hildesheim Bridge, Winterstoke Road and Flowerdown Bridge.

Linage: Thursday 11 July to Sunday 14 July. Staggered road closures between 8pm and 6am while the lineage is painted along the route.

A signed diversion route will be in place and drivers are asked to allow extra time for journeys as there will be disruption.
