A NEW hair salon specialising in "Afro-Caribbean and curly hair" has opened its doors in Weston.

Suzette Pires, whose nickname is Lela, opened Lela's - Hair Lounge in early February 2024.

Suzette, who has lived in the town for the last 15 years, used to work in Bristol before she decided to take the plunge and open the West Street salon.

As well as her professional achievements, Suzette has also appeared in a programme called Aquaphobia, which explores the question: 'Why do so few people from Black and Asian communities swim?'

Suzette told the Weston Mercury: "I've lived in Weston-super-Mare for the last 15 years but I've worked in Bristol for the last five years, so commuting was my biggest concern and I made the decision to open a salon closer to home. I opened the doors in early February.

"I had been a hairdresser for many years before a career break and further studies. I decides to go back into hairdressing and brush up my knowledge by going back to college for further education whist working in a salon in Bristol.

"Having lived in Weston-super-Mare I figured there is not a salon specialising in Afro-Caribbean and curly hair."
