FOUR training torpedoes located in an old Weston MOD base have been destroyed following concerns from several dog walkers.
Speaking yesterday (Thursday, April 4), a spokesperson from the Weston Coastguard Rescue team said: "If you were in the vicinity of Kewstoke or North Worle today you may have heard a loud bang!
"We had a visit from the Army EOD team (explosive ordnance disposal) to deal with four historic ‘training’ torpedoes at the old MOD base off Collum Lane.
"This ordnance has caused a few issues over the years with dog walkers etc calling them in as possible live ammunition, our first being way back in August 2021!
"With our most recent call-out being on March 20 it was decided they needed to be disposed of once and for all. As they were training units there was no explosive to worry about, just plenty of concrete filling.
"With a safety cordon in place and the items wrapped in detonation charges, the Army pressed the button and they were broken down into manageable pieces for disposal.
"We would like to thank any members of the public for their patience whilst the cordon was in place."
