THE government appears to have got its Somerset towns mixed up on official website of its Levelling Up scheme.
Weston-super-Mare is getting almost £20m from the scheme, which will turn the Tropicana into a new venue, revamp Grove Park, improve the Marine Lake, contribute to the restoration of Birnbeck Pier, and create more spaces for independent retail in the town centre.
But Westonians looking this up on the government’s Levelling Up website might have come away confused.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), leader of North Somerset Council Mike Bell (Weston-super-Mare Central, Liberal Democrats) pointed out: “The PM is on a UK tour to promote ‘Levelling Up.’
“I’m worried he might struggle to find Weston!
“On the official government page it has a photograph of somewhere else and refers to ‘West Town Centre.’ Oops.
“We all make mistakes, but I’ve sent Rishi directions just in case.”
Pictured instead was a dilapidated former hospital in Bridgwater — 15 miles away from Weston-super-Mare.
The hospital is set to benefit from the Levelling Up fund too and a major investment will turn it into “training centre of excellence in health and social care.”
