Here’s a snapshot of the festive activities that are happening across Weston-Super-Mare this December….
Weston’s Christmas Lights and Sights
Double celebrations are in place for Weston-Super-Mare’s yuletide offering this year as the light switch-on festivities in the town, on Saturday, December 2, will be combined with a Christmas market which promises to add even seasonal cheer to the day.
The festive affair will kick off at 10am in the Italian Gardens and the Winter Gardens when the Eat: Weston Christmas market will start, where an array of eclectic traders will be selling tasty festive food and a fine selection of items that would make perfect gifts. Santa Claus, who is known for his hearty appetite, will be on hand to meet and greet all the children.
The big switch-on will take place between 5pm and 5.30pm and will be held on the stage by the Christmas tree in the Italian Gardens or, in inclement weather, under the welcoming canopy of the Sovereign Centre. Incidentally, free parking is available at the Sovereign Centre on the day after 3pm.
Engaging entertainment is lined up featuring performers from the panto at the Blakehay Theatre and Weston Brass and local choir groups will be providing a musical backdrop to the countdown. The honour of the ‘lights switch on’ will go to the winner of the mayor’s children's Christmas card design competition.
Weston-super-Mare Mayor Cllr Ciaran Cronnelly, said: "This year our Christmas light switch-on is going to be extra magical and an event not to miss. We've heard your feedback about wanting a Christmas market alongside the switch-on and I'm delighted that this year we've partnered with Eat: Festival and Weston Bid to make this a reality.
“I'd encourage everyone to come along and watch our magical town become even brighter as we start the festivities.
“This year I'll be launching a Christmas card competition for 7–11-year-olds and the talented winner will be the star of the event as they help to turn on our Christmas lights."
The whole event has been organised by Weston Town Council and Weston BID, and this year carries added significance as it marks the final appearance of the current Christmas lights display. In 2024, a brand-new lighting design will be unveiled.

Get Your Skates On in Weston-Super-Mare
After a three-year hiatus, the Tropicana in Weston-Super-Mare is hosting its festive icy attraction. In 2019, more than 120,000 visitors flocked to Tropicana’s Icescape, a large undercover ice rink, and organisers are hoping for bumper numbers this year, especially as the attraction will be open for two months, closing on Sunday, January 7, 2024. The all-year-round entertainment venue will be transformed into a wintery wonderland accommodating up to 400 skaters during each 45-minute skate session on the ice. Special sessions for parents and toddlers will be available along with quiet and disco sessions. To find out more, visit: www.icescape-tropicana.co.uk.
