1,600 RUNNERS are expected to take part in this year's Christmas Cracker race.

The much-anticipated event, hosted by Weston Athletic Club (AC), will take place on Sunday, December 10.

Those wanting to take part are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible and support local charities with their entry fees and sponsorship support.

The scenic 10K race will begin at 11am. Participants will be able to take in picturesque views along the beach and the seafront.

The junior races will follow a 2K course on the beach starting at 9.30am and 10am.

You can sign up online on the Christmas Cracker website, which reads: "Now in its 35th year, this is Weston AC’s largest race with people coming back year after year to take part in the festive run.

"All standards of runner take part so don’t be put off if you are a new runner. Everyone is actively encouraged to wear fancy dress but please NO tinsel."

Race director, Jason Wyatt, said: “The Cracker is such a fun event to kick start the festive season and a great fund raiser for local charities.

“I’m really looking forward to race day and seeing thousands of penguins, snowmen, santas, stars, trees and fairies hurtling down the beach and I hope to see lots of people along the route cheering our runners on.

“As well as being a great race, the event also raises vital funds for local charities. Weston Athletic Club donates all race profits to charity, which last year saw Weston Hospicecare receive £5,000 with a further £5,000 to local children’s charities.”

Those needing a bit of training to get race-ready can take part in the club's training programme. This is suitable for new and returning runners.

Sessions take place on Monday evenings and Saturday mornings, meeting on the seafront.

Paul Baker, from Weston AC, is leading the programme. To learn more about the training sessions, you can email p.baker70@btinternet.com.

Paul said: “I’d encourage anyone who’s looking for some support with their running to join the programme.

"We have groups for different abilities, and offer a tried and tested programme. Training with others is much more fun – and safer now that the evenings are dark.”
