THE Birnbeck Regeneration Trust have launched a 'Plaque for a Plank' scheme to help raise funds for the restoration of the historic pier.

The pier has recently been purchased by North Somerset Council for a sum of £400K. The council are hoping to give the pier a new lease of life.

Architects Haverstock Associates and engineers will work with both the council and the RNLI to develop designs for the repair works to the pier and associated buildings, which will be followed by planning and marine consent applications.

Speaking when the sale was announced, John Crockford-Hawley, North Somerset councillor and heritage champion, said: “Today is a key date in Weston-super-Mare’s history – a day when we can finally start work on renovating Birnbeck Pier so residents and visitors alike will be able to enjoy it once again."

Cllr Mike Bell, leader of North Somerset Council, added: "Thanks to our partners' unwavering support along with millions in funding, we will now be working as quickly as possible to get on site, prevent any further collapse and renovate the pier and its buildings for future generations to enjoy."

As stated on The Birnbeck Regeneration Trust's website, it will take around 2850 planks to fully cover the pier's deck, and make it safe for residents and visitors to walk on.

For a £70 donation, you can get a shared plank with three other supporters with a brass plaque attached to the plank.

For £150, you can get a single plank donation with a brass plaque at the pier head. You will be able to identify your plank through an online plank identifier once the pier is open.

Posting on Facebook, a spokesperson from the trust said: "We are very excited to launch the Birnbeck Pier Plaque for a Plank scheme, to help raise funds for the restoration of our beautiful pier.

"By buying a plaque (engraved with your message) you will be helping to support the regeneration of this iconic pier.

"Each plaque will be fitted to the planks on the bridge once the pier is opened."
