WESTON Town Council have helped to curate a bespoke programme of events to honour Pride Month.
The programme of events, which is called Beautifully Proud, will start in June.
The town council have worked with local organisations such as the Proud Bar and Community Hub, University Centre Weston, Culture Weston, Pride in Weston and The Stable, in the hopes of encouraging both residents and businesses to celebrate diversity and love in all its forms.
The town council will honour the month in a number of ways, including:
- Flying a pride flag.
- Refurbishing planters and benches as part of the legacy of the project.
- Approaching local businesses and urging them to promote their themselves as inclusive spaces (those that sign up will receive a sticker showing their support).
Events include a craft workshop at The Stable, a Family Gayme Afternoon at The Stables Games Room and storytelling at Weston Museum.
Two Drag Shows will be hosted at The Blakehay. Residents can also enjoy a Night of Magic, Misfits and Making Stuff Up at The Stables Games Room.
Sarah Pearse, deputy town clerk, Weston-super-Mare Town Council, said: “We are incredibly excited to be part of the Beautifully Proud project. Weston-super-Mare is a diverse and vibrant town and we feel that this programme of events shines a spotlight on what can be achieved through collaborative working.
"As the town council we are always looking for new ways to better support the communities of Weston-super-Mare. With all eyes being on Weston this year as the host of UK Pride, we wanted to take the opportunity to showcase our town as an inclusive and welcoming place for all.”
The Pride in Weston weekend will take place on July 1 and July 2. The main event, which is free, will take place on the Beach Lawns. As stated on the UK Pride 2023 website, the event aims to be inclusive to all, celebrating people's individuality.
There will be a Pride Parade, which will start at 11am on July 1 at the Italian Gardens, as well as a wide range of entertainment and camping opportunities.
Volunteers to help out over the weekend are always welcome.
