A LOCAL woman is tackling a second London Marathon in 6 months - all in the name of raising money for Make-A-Wish UK.
Gillian Porter, a 47-year-old Worle-based runner and businessowner, will be running the marathon to help the charity grant wishes to critically ill children.
Gillian says: "Every critically ill kid should have that opportunity to smile through a wish. If you can help make that happen, then why not?
"You'll regret not running the London Marathon more than you’ll regret doing it."
Gillian was inspired to raise money for the charity by running the London Marathon in October 2022, after she learnt about Ellie's story. When speaking to the Mercury, Gillian said: "I read about a little girl who was born in the same year as my daughter and was suffering the same cancer my husband is in remission for.
"Her wish was to have her house completely decorated for Christmas.
"At the end of the video, it was revealed the Ellie had sadly passed away a month later.
"I wanted to help grant wishes to children who really need something to cheer them up at a dark time.’
As stated on the Make-A-Wish UK website, the charity aims to empower children and give them a chance to do something that they love.
Alison Doidge, challenge events manager at Make-A-Wish, said: "Every runner is a vital part of our mission to grant life-changing wishes. The time and dedication they put into their journey is staggering and we’re immensely grateful for each and every one of them.
"You can’t do it for another better charity. That finish line feeling is a once in the lifetime feeling. To know that what you’ve done helps other people whilst ticking off a bucket list activity- there's not a downside."
Gillian is in the final stages of her training for the 2023 London Marathon. So far, she has raised £3000 for Make-A-Wish UK.
Gillian concludes: "I class myself as extremely lucky that I am able to go out every day and run.
"Everyone wants to help and encourage each other, so I'm really looking forward to the marathon this April."
