WESTON-super-Mare Foodbank will be able to help more people in need thanks to a donation from a local housebuilder.

Bellway, which is building new homes at its Mead Fields development in the town, gave £300 to the charity.

The foodbank provides vital food parcels for people in Weston and the surrounding area who are struggling to provide food for themselves and their families or dependants.

Frederique Wigmore, foodbank project manager, said: “The number of people we support every year is increasing and we’re seeing more and more people turning to us in times of need.

“Our range of parcels are prepared in advance and are equipped to provide a minimum of three days of emergency food.

"We supported around 6,000 people in 2021 and we provided support for 7,809 people last year.

“Our vision is for a UK without foodbanks.

"We don’t think anyone should have to face going hungry and we want to see more people helped out of crisis and fewer people needing foodbanks in the future.

“Bellway’s generous donation will go a long way and we can buy 15 extra food parcels..”

Bellway South West is building 150 homes at Mead Fields, off Wolvershill Road.

The company has also submitted plans for a 53-home development – to be known as Lavender Rise – on land off Houlgate Way, in Axbridge.

Rachel Way, sales manager for Bellway South West, said: “The team at Weston-super-Mare Foodbank do an incredible job supporting those most in need and we were keen to do something to help.

“In addition to providing new housing across the South West, including at our new developments in Somerset, we want to support local people and initiatives to ensure that we are giving back to the communities in which we are delivering our homes."
