LOCALS say the conversion of a once 'quiet family home' in Weston into a seven-bed house for rehabilitating young adults is an 'overdevelopment'.
In September, work started to turn 15 Gerard Road into a house of multiple occupancy (HMO) retrospective of planning permission and devoid of consultation with neighbours.
The semi-detached house saw previous use as a five-bed care home more than 20 years ago but has remained empty for almost a year.
Now locals are concerned that its conversion may damage the street's 'community spirit' and exacerbate parking issues.
Janet Taylor, of 11a Gerard Road, says the works have been an 'unnecessary overdevelopment' and will worsen poor parking provision in the area.
"The developers have been very sneaky and not told anyone about their plans until the last minute. They also have completed most, if not all, of the work already arrogantly assuming that it will be approved.
"I’m strongly opposed to the works as there are already parking issues on the road and this will make things much worse."
She added: "There is a great community spirit among neighbours and a HMO will not add to that, with people likely to stay for short periods."
Other concerns relate to an increase in noise, nuisance and potential anti-social behaviour, with one local taking aim at the planning application which 'incorrectly' states the house is a current four-bedroom HMO.
Weston Civic Society has also objected to the plans, saying the move to a seven-bed will increase parking misery for motorists as there is only space for three cars on the driveway at present.
It said: "Half of the road is double yellow lined and the other half uncontrolled and there are seldom spare places to be found."
Two bedrooms have been created on the ground floor and a further five upstairs. The house will also see two shared bathrooms and showers along with a kitchen diner and communal space.
The works have not made any external alterations to the building.
Some residents claim a submittal of planning post-renovation was 'unacceptable considering the impact it will inevitably have on our daily lives'.
Another said: "Gerard Road is a mix of happy young families, professional, self-employed people, and retirees.
"The development would likely change the character and atmosphere of the street with a substantial increase in short-term and therefore relatively anonymous occupancy, and a concomitant decrease in the current sense of community and reciprocal care between neighbours."
