WESTON sitcom The Café will not be returning for a third series, broadcaster Sky has confirmed.
The Sky One show, which was filmed on the town’s seafront by Marine Lake, was written by and starred Ralf Little and Weston’s own Michelle Terry.
The comedy ran for 12 30-minute episodes and one 60-minute series finale which aired earlier this year.
Filming had taken place in a specially constructed café set in Knightstone Road.
A statement released by Sky One said: “We can confirm that The Cafe will not be returning for a third series.
“It is a show that we are incredibly proud of but we have to make difficult decisions regarding which series to bring back.
“We would like to thank the writers and performers Ralf Little and Michelle Terry, the brilliant cast and crew and production company Jellylegs for delivering two wonderful series.”
Michelle Terry tweeted when the second series finished in September: “Thank you for all the lovely messages about #TheCafé. Can’t believe it’s finished already! Very proud of and grateful to all involved.”
Mercury readers responded with mixed feelings on Facebook this week, with some decrying the show’s merits and others expressing regret.
Heidi Griffin said: “Oh that’s sad. It was just getting into its stride. The writing and acting were so much better in the second series than the first.
“The characters were coming alive as their story was unfolding.
“It’s a really shame as it’s a nice gentle comedy which showcased Weston at its best.
“We as a family will definitely miss it.”
Peter Potts said: “They must give it one more go, I thought the second series was brilliant.”
Julie Richardson said: “It was beautifully written and acted and showed the beauty of Weston at its best.”
But John Quick added: “It was funny in places but nothing to write home about so not surprised.”
