A CONGRESBURY furniture-maker has put the finishing touches to a new altar for a historic chapel.

Robert Coles was commissioned to design and build the altar this year for St John’s Chapel in St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol.

His maritime-inspired creation forms a crucial part of the chapel’s refurbishment to commemorate 100 years since the outbreak of World War One.

Robert said: “Having been born and bred in South Bristol, as were my ancestors, it has been a great honour and privilege to be asked to make this altar and to contribute something back into the community.

“I hope it will be enjoyed for many years to come.”

Robert used some materials that come naturally from the South West to complete the design and some that would have been imported through Bristol’s docks over the years.

The chapel, in which a symbolic candle will burn continuously for the next four years, has been refurbished by Wedmore architects Benjamin and Beauchamp.
