? Weston Borough Council discussed the barrage plan. The imagined Bristol Channel Barrage scheme included a seven-and-a-half mile dual carriageway from Brean Down to Lavernock Point, just south of Cardiff, with Flat Holm as the central link. If the plans ever came to fruition, it was expected that the barrage would generate electricity.
? Weston-super-Mare was hit by a blizzard, with roads becoming treacherous as they froze over. A bus also had to be dug out of the snow.
? A church was struggling to keep on top of its noticeboard as its letters kept being eaten by rats and birds. The Brent Knoll church solved the problem by covering the notices with cellophane.
? The borough council recommended rejecting a proposal for a six-day shopping week after getting limited support from traders. The council had met with the Chamber of Trade to discuss a suggestion that traders in High Street be exempted from the obligation to close on one half-day a week.
? The ‘cost of dying’ was due to double in Blagdon, with the price of burial fees increasing to £3.
? People living in Upper Worle were about to get something they had been waiting 30 years for – a bus service.
? Members of Weston St John AFC were due to reveal plans to develop a social and recreation centre at the site of the former Windwhistle Inn on the Bournville estate.
