Weston Lions Club members blindfolded the town’s mayor before leading her through the centre of town to raise awareness of vision impairments.
The Lions’ work helping visually-impaired people dates back to when Helen Keller, an American activist who was deaf and blind, addressed a Lions Club International convention in Ohio in 1925. Lions’ members have been known as her ‘Knights Of The Blind’ ever since.
The Weston club had a stall in the Sovereign Shopping Centre on October 12, which was World Sight Day.
Volunteers spoke with passers-by about the importance of eye tests and how people can donate old pairs of glasses to people in Africa and India.
Weston mayor Jos Holder helped to raise awareness by putting on a blindfold and being led through the centre.
Mr Peters said: “This event was all about raising awareness and letting people know we are here if they need us.”
